One of the most frequent questions I’m asked about ultralight travel is how we handle souvenirs. Do we bring any back?

Short answer is yes. .
Since becoming minimalists a number of years ago, we’ve found smaller but still meaningful ways to remember our adventures to avoid cluttering our home. We pass on large items like bottles of wine, artwork, and general trinkets and have moved to easy-to-pack things like little rocks, jewelry ... and pictures on my phone of course.

One of the unexpected payoffs is that we savor moments so much more. Leaving the best white wine ever in #Santorini recently was a bummer, but I savored the taste and experience so much more knowing that I wasn’t taking any home with me. I tasted the fullness of the moment and was more present. My memories are rich.

This practice is something I strive for in daily life too. Less phone time, less mindless shopping, and less having-the-latest to have more freedom to experience the present, more time to observe, and more mental space to recover, renew, and explore. 💯 not perfect at this, but living with less stuff has been a significant step forward in pursuit of this practice.

Here’s my ultralight list of toiletries for our recent 10-day trip to Greece. Includes hacks such as doubling lip product as blush, coconut oil as face moisturizer that doubles as lotion/lip balm, eye brow pencil that doubles as eye shadow/liner. Also includes: shampoo bar from @lush (Jason and the Argon oil, my fav), blob of toothpaste in a little jar, conditioner in a little jar, @crystaldeodorant, concealer, trial-size mascara, meds, razor (one-time use that I’m using over and over for travel ... terrible, but it’s so light weight!), and comb. Picture doesn’t include sunscreen, which we probably should have worn starting day 1, #burntnosestillrecovering. 🙄 All of this fits into a tiny bag that I store at the top of my backpack for easy access for airport security.

I’d consider myself to be a planner, but when it comes to traveling I let loose a little and build in ample time for wandering. We organize the framework - transportation, lodging, and general logistics - then develop a list of a few things we would like to see along with a goal for the trip; little to no agenda. The goal for our recent trip to Greece was simply to BE; let my brain rest after a few busy months and drink in views for so long that smells, sounds, feel of the air would be fully lodged in my mind as well. I lingered, wandered, observed, and most importantly didn’t pressure myself to learn all the things and read every plaque. We moved at a slower pace; bed at 9pm every night, no regrets when we slept in far too long, and did so much casual walking. Glorious! Goal achieved! Even despite the jet lag my mental space is more rested and recharged than I’ve ever felt returning from an international trip.
